Today a patient called me a "cute, little nurse."

I was like "nuh uh, I'm a doctor" and I motioned to my long, white coat.

She said "oh sorry, excuse me, a cute, little doctor."

Poopy Pat.

Where's Pat? I miss Pat. Why is she in Miami? What if a Hurricane hits her? That would be sad. Would the hurricane lift her up and fly her across the Gulf? Nah, that's a tornado.

Quote from Stiller & Sandler TBS marathon.

Irving Feffer: It's not about what happened in the past, or what you think might happen in the future. It's about the ride, for Christ's sake. There is no point in going through all this crap, if your are not going to enjoy the ride. And you know what... when you least expect something great might come along. Something better then you even planned for.

Along came polly.

Judging.

Lately, I've been receiving more comments about how young I look. In medical school, people would tell me that I looked like I was in high school. Now the comments are that I look like I'm 12. Why 12?

Today I recevied two comments in the elevators. One was an abrupt "You too young!" Why thank you for noticing. The next was a sweet older lady saying, "You're a tiny little thing, aren't you?" What am I supposed to say to that? Why yes I am a tiny little thing, thank you for noticing. Now would someone say, "wow you're huge, aren't you" to an obese person?

Because I look young and I'm small, I get lots of comments. Don't get my wrong. I'm satisfied with my body image. It just gets tiresome. What if I was large or tall or big? I suppose I'm guilty of giving unnecssary comments about people's appearances also. I have stopped on occassion and said to a stranger "Oh my goodness, how tall are you?"

Here's another comment from this morning, "First Reynoso, now Gonzalez. Man, you all are taking over."

If you're in the medical field, you know the face of medicine is definitely changing. Medicine was a field dominated by white men who didn't mind working all day long, and all night for that matter. They sacrificied their family and social life and gave their all to medicine. Now we have women and minorities in medicine. I happen to be both.

Fun Fact.

Today on call, I was looking up penguins. Remember the song, Yankee Doodle...

Macaroni Penguins http://www.kidzone.ws/animals/penguins/facts18.htm
"Macaroni" used to be a hairstyle in England. (didn't you ever wonder why Yankee Doodle called the feather in his cap, "Macaroni"? Now you know!) The Macaroni penguins were so named because the yellow and black feathers sticking out of the side of their heads looked like the English hairstyle.

Straight from the horse's mouth.

There is a well-known rivalry between my former medical school and the school across the street. Today at dinner a resident who graduated from the school across the street, and is now an internal medicine resident in my old school, told me that our school does a much better job at preparing their medical students than his old school. Ha! We are smarter or at least better trained!

speaking of schizophrenia...

Today my attending said he and I were being a bit schizophrenic. I would start presenting a patient then we would get sidetracked by a topic. Then, he'd get paged. Then, we would open up a radiology file, discuss a medication, remember another patient, etc. Then, we'd loop back to our patient presentation but get sidetracked, paged, open a file all over again.

Funny story. So a patient was turning blue today and pt. was moved to the appropriate critical unit. It turns out that the pt's oxygen was off. Oops.
