The Culture of Family Medicine.

Have I mentioned that out of 14 residents, I am the only one who is single?

Five of us are not married. Two of those are engaged to be married this fall. Two are in committed relationships. And me. Almost everyone has children. This is the culture of family medicine. :)

Rosas.

This lovely rose is the variety we used in our wedding 25 years ago. 'Sonia' is a perfectly formed, clear pink rose that has a sweet, fruity fragrance. An exceptional cutting rose.

Forms. They're an excuse to use Dr or MD.

I was filling out an order form a second ago and it asked for title.
Miss? Mrs? Mr? Dr?
You got that right. It's Dr. !!!

Miami, FL.

Pat can't leave. There's a hurricane. She'll have to wait until hurricane season is over. Do you think her residency program will agree with that? What if we write her a doctor's excuse? :)

Men and Babies.

Here's some interesting statistics about men and fatherhood.

64% of Men Have Done THIS by Age 29--> had children, according to CDC and netscape men.

When men talk...this is what we find out:
* Among black fathers, 25 percent fathered their first child as a teenager, compared with 19 percent of Hispanic fathers and 11 percent of white fathers.
* 50 percent of the men who married when they were teenagers were divorced or separated within a decade, compared with 17 percent of men who married at age 26 or older.
* When their first child was born, 66 percent of men were either currently or formerly married to the child's mother, while 18 percent were living unmarried with the mother and 16 percent were not living with the mother.
* Of those fathers who are currently in their first marriage, 90 percent live with their children. They are also involved in their kids' lives, feeding and bathing them as babies and then helping with homework and driving them to activities as they get older.
* Men who have a college degree plan to have fewer children, but when they do become dads, they are more involved than men who have less education.
* Of all men ages 22 to 44 years old, 47 percent who have had less than a high school education had a child outside of marriage, compared with just 6 percent of college graduates.
* When presented with this statement: "It is better to get married than go through life single," 66 percent of men agreed with it, compared to just 51 percent of women.

Romance or Dopamine?

Lusty people may have a variation in their D4 dopamine receptor.

About 30 percent of the participants had a particular variation of the D4 gene and all of them had a stronger sex drive than the others.
Netscape Love.

Family Conversation & OCD Traits.

My mom calls me the other day... (see Tyson's typical family conversation)

mom: I was watching Stephanie's behavior today and she definitely does not have OCD.
me: Right mom. She doesn't have the disorder but she has traits. (Steph's my 6 yr old cousin)
mom: No, cuz I know kids with OCD and she doesn't have it.
me: Right mom. She doesn't have the disorder. She just has traits. Some behaviors, but not the disorder.
mom: No, those kids are really bad. Steph's behaviors are normal for her age.
me: Are they mom?
mom: Yeah, cuz I know kids with OCD and she doesn't have it. Those kids are really bad.

now this can repeat over and over until I say "okay, mom" or change the topic.

Example OCD behaviors:
-Sorted my Uno cards by colors, numbers and word cards. Pounded on the floor when my stepbrother mixed the cards because he ruined everything.
-Food can't be touching each other or she can't eat it.
-Sorted my photos by those with me, and those without me. Would not let me put them back in order. And noticed a week later that photos got moved.
-Sorted her schoolwork.
Basically, things have to be done a certain way or else it's the end of the world.

Love and Marriage.

Uh-oh.

Newsweek states that
According to the research, a woman who remained single at 30 had only a 20 percent chance of ever marrying. By 35, the probability dropped to 5 percent. (Old Stats)

The median age for a first marriage—25 for women, 27 for men—is higher than ever before.

When the Census last crunched the numbers in 1996, a single woman at 40 had a 40.8 percent chance of eventually marrying.
Okay, now I'm gonna look at some birth rates. I recently read that Japan is losing its population as well as some European countries. Japan's decline in children has even coined a new word, 'shoshika', meaning a society without children. Japan's birth rate is 9.37 births/1,000 population (2006 est.). The US has a birth rate of 13.9 per 1,000 persons in 2002. I don't understand the numbers. How does this translate into a dwindling Japanese population? The article I read quote a 1.37-ish birth rate. That number I understand. I'm missing something.

Ursprache. It won the spelling bee challenge, but what does it mean. I couldn't find it on merriam webster.

I found this,
The term Ursprache is German for "the speech of Ur", Ur being an ancient
city of Babylonia ... So the term Ursprache means the "Lost Language of
Paradise".

Gifts from men.

I've noticed that some men have a difficult time with gifts. According to Travelocity, 78% of men have trouble with gifts or making romantic plans. Plus, only one in four feels he can change this habit.

So, next time I want a romantic evening out, I guess I might as well plan it myself. And next time I want a gift, maybe I'll just have the guy take me shopping. ;)
